Would you know, I don't think I ever asked? They are so insistent on coming and going as they please. I was simply glad my shop was satisfactory to her.

It was very flattering!

They are quite majestic. And a little stuck up, but don't tell anyone I said that.

Though if you had a kirin visit your shop certainly would not have been just a pet store now, would it...

They might prefer self-assured. And I'll have you know, she did leave the shop with a customer. Of her own volition, of course, but a business transaction all the same.

A human customer?

Goodness. Won't even talk to one of Inari's tenko but will walk out the door with one of them...

She had her reasons. They are notoriously difficult, though, that much is certain.

[afoxylady]

It isn't faaaair.

You- Why would you hunt a Kirin?

...Eh? Oh, no, no, not like that. I meant only to find one.

I am far too wise to consider killing a kirin within my powers, even if they were not dampened as they are by this place.

[pruning]

[r-relieved for the absent kirins]

Dampened...?

[afoxylady]

Unfortunately so. Back home I was able to do many, many things with my illusions.

Here I'm lucky if I can trick two or three people are once.

[pruning]

[oh gosh neat]

Would you show me something?

[afoxylady]

What, an illusion? If you so wish.

[ She moves only to get up and pour herself another cup of tea-- and, well, since it was on her mind she conjures up the image of a Kirin near where they sit, the creature watching them with gentle, surveying eyes. ]

[pruning]

[he is riveted, looking at the kirin with brief scrutiny -- but it passes whatever accuracy test he had in mind and oh it's just so lovely.]

That's very impressive, Miss Kaori.

[afoxylady]

Isn't it just? ...Unfortunately...

[ Swipes a hand at it... and it simply goes right through, though the kirin does flick its ears forward curiously. After a moment, it disappears into smoke. ]

I have lost all ability to make it feel natural. But let's keep that between us.

[pruning]

Oh... that is a pity.

[bye kirin :'(] You needn't worry, though; I won't tell a soul.

If you wish to see more for nostalgia at any time, I will be here. I enjoy using my abilities, in any case. I do not often get to-- at least not like that.

I would be honored to see any of your conjurings. Likewise, if you would like to hear more about the creatures in my shop...

I'll be sure to ask. ...Actually, I am curious to know if you'd had any dealings with foxes, while we're still here.

One of the more permanent residents of my shop was a fox, actually. We called him Ten-chan -- very young, very... crude. He had his moments.

[afoxylady]

That sounds about right. "Ten-chan"? How precious.

[pruning]

He insisted. An admirable free spirit, if mischievous at precisely the worst times.

[afoxylady]

I would expect nothing less from one of mine. I daresay I'm proud.

[pruning]

He is a lovely boy.

[pause] As long as he doesn't demolish the shop while I'm away.

I wish I could give you some solace, but with one so young...
