Who: rinnn and you
When: Day 46, late afternoon
Where: FOURTH FLOOR, IN SOME EMPTY APARTMENT
What: lolol more magical experiments
[ maybe you get pinged by magic
or maybe you just are nosy or maybe you are pinged by swearing. which has happened with frequency about every fifteen minutes, and with vitriol.
but there's some girl sitting in an apartment up here. There's a pile of rocks next to her and a crazy magic circle on the ground in front of her with a rock shaped like a lopsided bowl in the middle. A lopsided bowl with a giant crack down the middle :T
There's also a notebook with some stuff written in it off to the side as well as some food on a plate ... study munchies '-' ]

*pausing to consider the spell*
Would another material work for you? I might suggest bone, but I'm used to working with that sort of thing.

[ thinks ]
I'm not sure I can use it, but maybe something more flexible is needed . . .
no subject
You're used to working with minerals, I take it? Hmm....
*thinkinggg*

[ a pause to work down her pride a bit. ]
I'm not having as much luck with the 'alert' part of this either. I thought it would be good to have both . . .
no subject
Ice, perhaps? It wouldn't last, of course, but it's certainly common, and a little thaumaturgy could keep them fresh until needed. I'm not certain it could take the energies you use, though.
*nods, kneeling down to examine that bit of the spell*
It would be; it's not as if this were an open space, so light alone wouldn't always be enough....

I thought about the opposite with fire, actually. Keep it contained and burning inside a container. That would take care of the 'light' problem as well, but it's a little unpredictable and doesn't hold shape as well.
no subject
It would have the advantage of a bit of energy generation, too, but it's probably too unstable for anything complex.

[ sigh :|aaa ]

*a bit wry*
If nothing else, it should fail differently.
no subject
That's true. I estimate if I were to keep following this path it might take me a few weeks to make the right spell. But failing differently could speed that up.
no subject
Variety of failure is important, in my experience.

I'm familiar with the sort of tunnel vision that focus on a project can bring. Sometimes a fresh look is all it takes, and I'm always happy to discuss theory with another skilled sorcerer.

All right! We'll get this done in no time then.
no subject
I certainly hope I'll be of that much use.
On the alert, incidentally...have you thought of making it a linked spell? One part passively resident in whatever we end up using, linked to another in a central container of some kind. Activating the flare would dispel the passive component, break the link and trigger an alert. If we want to be clever, I'm sure we could find a way to guide people towards the place where the link was broken.

[ considers ]
That would certainly make it easier, well to an extent. Linking spells can be tricky . . .
no subject
True. It could be worth trying, at least as another avenue. And it would reduce the amount of power the portable container would need to withstand...
no subject
Do you have much experience with alert spells?
no subject
Some, yes. Mostly stationary wards, but the theory should cross-apply.

I wonder, though...perhaps we could just make a large-scale detection ward attuned to the energy of the flares; that would let us use fire to contain them. The problem would be range, and finding something solid enough to anchor it.
no subject
[ ponders ]
. . . range is definitely a problem. I don't have any special sensing skills, just average ones but I can tell I'm limited to a far smaller area than I should be.
no subject
*nods*
The advantage would be that we could spend more time and effort powering the detection ward, but even so it might not be enough.
