or maybe you just are nosy or maybe you are pinged by swearing. which has happened with frequency about every fifteen minutes, and with vitriol.

but there's some girl sitting in an apartment up here. There's a pile of rocks next to her and a crazy magic circle on the ground in front of her with a rock shaped like a lopsided bowl in the middle. A lopsided bowl with a giant crack down the middle :T

There's also a notebook with some stuff written in it off to the side as well as some food on a plate ... study munchies '-' ]

I'm familiar with the sort of tunnel vision that focus on a project can bring. Sometimes a fresh look is all it takes, and I'm always happy to discuss theory with another skilled sorcerer.

On the alert, incidentally...have you thought of making it a linked spell? One part passively resident in whatever we end up using, linked to another in a central container of some kind. Activating the flare would dispel the passive component, break the link and trigger an alert. If we want to be clever, I'm sure we could find a way to guide people towards the place where the link was broken.

That would certainly make it easier, well to an extent. Linking spells can be tricky . . .

True. It could be worth trying, at least as another avenue. And it would reduce the amount of power the portable container would need to withstand...

Do you have much experience with alert spells?

Some, yes. Mostly stationary wards, but the theory should cross-apply.

That's my problem too -- my family had some but they were all anchored to the land . . .

I wonder, though...perhaps we could just make a large-scale detection ward attuned to the energy of the flares; that would let us use fire to contain them. The problem would be range, and finding something solid enough to anchor it.

Like one in reverse?

. . . range is definitely a problem. I don't have any special sensing skills, just average ones but I can tell I'm limited to a far smaller area than I should be.

The advantage would be that we could spend more time and effort powering the detection ward, but even so it might not be enough.

That's true, but my guess is that it would take more power than we have. Especially given how easy people get lost in the forest.

There's plenty of people who qualify as 'magi' here even if they aren't formally trained or technically magic users. What about something that connected to their power . . .?

It would take a longer to do them for people but might take some of the strain off the item itself.

That might just work better. And if they're already attuned, we can have an idea of who's triggering them, as well as where...

If anything a sure way to know if someone is in danger or just on a longer venture out would be good too.

Hmm. That might be relatively easy, actually; there are talismans in Creation which react to "harm", and I'm...somewhat attuned to that form of magic. Spilled blood would be the easiest trigger.

. . . Oh, hey. How difficult would that be to link it to the other parts we were discussing do you think? Especially if it was attuned and drew power from the person carrying it?

Not difficult, I should think. Especially in that case. It's a refinement of the trigger conditions more than anything.

I think this sounds like a good direction though.

Agreed. I can diagram the sort of ward I mean fairly easily, and then we can start working out how to combine them...ah, I'm going to have to sketch the thaumaturgic structure, though, I don't think our notation is going to be compatible to start with. We'll work something out, though.

Mm. . . that's fine. I wonder if it would be possible to nest them? Like -- a pork bun . . . put one inside the other. That way we wouldn't have to mesh our styles too much but they would work together.
