[the vines along the floor get thicker the further you get from the stairs]

[there are some faint animal sounds coming from ahead, grunts and growls]

the noises set him a little on edge, though, so he quiets down momentarily and sets a hand on an arrow.

... also scuffing a vine with his foot to make sure it's not a Thing like the bugtrees ]

[lance up and ready as he moves towards the sounds]

[ Pauses then takes a step back because you do not leave your squishy mage in the front of the party. ]

[the vines don't fight back at all, but keep going and you might find something that will]

[in a darkened doorway there's an animal about two feet off the ground hunched over eating something... something still alive and groaning]

[ SHOOTS THE THING the one that's eating, not being eaten ]

[no reaction from the thing when the arrow hits it, except to chomp down hard and finally finish off the meal its eating. the only sounds left are slurps and sucking]

[ ... Huh. ]

... Either that thing has some serious armor, or we're in bigger trouble.

[mutters, glances at Cayden]

[moves forward to get a better look at the creature]

[ aren't there fairy lights everywhere, can I pull a string of that down and throw it at the thing to get a better look at it ]

[as you get closer the animal turns to look at you in return]

[it has a short face and very distinctive, bright eyes, and at first glance it might actually be a monkey, but it's not moving very fast when it turns, or when it gets up on all fours and starts moving in your direction]

[ Annnd another step toward the back of this group. ]

... Do monkeys usually eat live prey and not respond to arrows in their back?

[stabbing is less ignorable than an arrow. Pulling back from the spear tip with a small trickle of blood seeping out of the wound. then it just sits back on the ground and doesn't move]
