[There is a stew bubbling happily over the fire; leaf "platters" and shish-kebabs(? something-chunks on sticks), salad, a somewhat overcooked stirfry, and a gourd filled with fruit chunks in milky liquid are arranged on the kitchen counter.]

If what you're saying is 'life is hard,' I don't see how it follows that you thought you were due for some good luck. I'd think you'd think the opposite.

According to probability, something has to go right some of the time, even if it's only by chance.

So dour! What about people who just have things go right for them all the time?

Are there people like that?

Of course there are. And there's plenty who're luckier than you, either way.

Even the luckiest person I knew ended up in that place.

But he got out, didn't he? Besides, going there was a choice. Not the best one, not a fully-informed one, but a choice all the same. Dealing with the consequences of our choices is what life is about.

Life has nothing to do with that.

Life has everything to do with that. Sure, there're things beyond our control, and usually they aren't fun. But how we react to those things, and how we deal with everything else, that's all us, good or bad.

Then what about the people that make nothing but terrible choices and just skate by anyway?

What about them?

There aren't always consequences.

Not how you're expecting, no. How do people think of that guy? As smart and skilled? or just foolish and lucky? How do people react to them? Is it just as good to 'skate by' as to actually have a definitive success or failure?
