[Maria is coming into apartment sparkles with a TON of food. Since she thought it'd be nice for everyone to have a meal together.]

So you didn't need anything else while going over rough terrain.

Ah, right. No, we didn't. It was being funded -- sort of -- by two governments.

Two? That must have been impressive work.

Well, it started because of something on our mutual border. Then we may have gotten a bit sidetracked, but it was to both Aldis's and Jarzon's benefit.

Still sounds impressive. Things that affect countries are pretty large scale.

Well, we found out that some officials in Jarzon had been compromised by Kern, so it did affect Jarzon -- and Kern is a mutual enemy.

I don't mean to talk shop around you.

Oh dear, that does sound like it could be dangerous.

It's all right. I'm used to hearing a lot about travelers and countries.

Because you worked at a bar?

Near a port too.

I can imagine, then. Do you know, I didn't see the sea until I was... maybe in my twenties and being assigned to an island six weeks' sail from the mainland?

Were you in one of the inner parts of the country then?

I grew up in the mountains in the north. Jarzon doesn't have much of a seacoast, and most of that is rocks or the outlet to the Veran Marsh.

Rocks can be rather tricky.

It wasn't much of a seacoast -- we didn't ship much around.

That is unfortunate.

It is what geography we had.

I do admit, I have a bias for the water, but we did get to see a lot of beautiful landscapes when we had to stray farther away.

Most people like the country they grow up in. I admit I miss the mountains, especially in the summer.

Summer was always the best time.

It's easy to watch the lights at night without being cold.

You mean the stars and moon?

[Shakes her head.] The lights of the town on the water.
