WINTER WONDERLAND

Where: 3rd Floor, Common Area
What: Because Albi wanted to be Jack Frost BECAUSE CHRISTMAS

[There will be a bit of a drop in the temperature of the third floor today. Nothing too bad until you enter the Common Area, where you will find a good percentage of it is, in fact, covered in snow. There's mounds of it all over and more than enough to play and frolic in. There's even one mound big enough to sled down. And there's an area over that that's just pure ice and there some ice skates along the edge.]

[Around the edge of of the mini winter wonderland are tables with coats and other such winter wear.]

A warm climate then?

Fairly warm, yes. Not too hot, but never too cold in the winters. It, ah, caused some problems the first time I did go somewhere cold.

It can take a while to get used to the cold the first time.

It wasn't just that. Back then, my arm and leg were metal prosthetics... they were attached directly to bone and nerves, and the cold chilled them so much I was at risk of permanent damage.

...yes, that would be very dangerous in the cold.

I was... ah, a little reckless, back then. And not very familiar with cold. I rushed in without thinking.

It seems like people easily forget that metal does not do well in snow.

Perhaps I should put that in the lesson plan.

I hadn't been anywhere cold since I'd gotten the automail, too. I was used to dealing with warmer climates, so it never crossed my mind.

It couldn't hurt to add it in.

The human mind really can get used to interesting things.

Is it different with your kind?

In a sense. I have found it difficult to think of things too much in other domains that aren't in relation to mine somehow.

Could that be changed? Are there ways to modify or expand your domain beyond where you started? Or is it immutable?

...there are ways to change domains. Expansion usually happens naturally.

But it's not something I have the desire to encourage without it being necessary.

Mm, I'm not particularly interested in altering your domain, anyway. I was just curious whether it could be done through outside forces.

[scienceoficecream]

The easiest way is usually with outside forces. There have been times other ways were found, but usually change comes from the shift in human belief.

It's why gods with old concept domains can have newer concept domains.

So some of you have changed in the past?

Do you think humanity has called science, science when they were first starting to believe in deities connected to ice?

Does that mean that your domain was magic, once?

[scienceoficecream]

It depends on how you define magic.

If you mean magic where people say 'it's magic' and stop trying to figure things out, then no. With my domain of science, it would be wrong to assume I have control over how the sciences operate. [Paaaause.] To assume I have total control.

It is more of what drives science. How, why, what. The pursuit of these questions in the natural world are the facet of humanity that go into what makes science. The desire for an explanation would be what it was originally. Study.

I've never seen much difference between magic and science, myself. The difference, to me, is in the understanding of it. When it's science, we know, or at least think we know, the reasons why something happens, but what we call "magic" can just as easily have reasons within our ability to comprehend that we just haven't yet discovered.

In what I've seen of both, the difference isn't as grand as most would suggest. Though it is unfortunate when one simply accepts a thing as "magic" and doesn't continue to explore and broaden their understanding.

It is. Magic can be explained, it's just humans don't have a means to explain it yet.

Which is why that little tendency has annoyed me. Magic doesn't mean one should give up. It's just something else to discover.

Someone I care for deeply was as skilled in magic as I was in science, maybe more. With the way he explained the things he did, I never could see any difference besides the name. Labels aside, his magic was just as bound by rules as any science I've studied.

To call a thing magic is simply to root it in mysteries.

...yes, that would be a good way to look at it.

...Something like this, for instance. Your snow. It's something many would call magic, isn't it? But you're bound by rules to produce it, rules that if you follow will have the same result each time, right?

[scienceoficecream]

That's correct. I've figured out several processes, but each time, the specific process produces the same result as long as there's no other unexpected factors.
