How many papers have you written?

Ah-- no papers, just notes... there are lots of plants that are useless for my purposes, but I've found a few that will serve a purpose. Honestly, it seems kind of useless, practising this kind of non-combative magic here when our primary concern is the nature, but... well, it gives me something else to do, and Kain is always happy for the knowledge.

They want us to restore humanity, hmm? Or something like that, anyway. There's a lot more to humanity than war, even if that tends to be a focal point.

... Mm. And maybe this time around we'll have magic for the people, instead of magic only for snobs.

Back in my world, magical society was a very small percentage of the population and new blood was fairly rare. Everything was kept a secret and as such, magic was only done for that small part of the population that knew of its' existence. As you can imagine, a good number of them ended up as snobs.

[Nod] All of them. The Holy Church has a faction that's devoted to "cleaning up" any accidental magical messes made by magi-- erasing evidence of magic in the public eye and then mind-wiping any witnesses, as well as assassinating any magi who don't comply with their code of secrecy.

That sounds . . . so dull. Why would anyone want that?

People like feeling superior. Secret knowledge gives them that opportunity.

That must have been hard, for someone who loves knowledge.

I managed. It's more worrying to think about all the people who could have had the potential to be magi in them but will never know, just because they weren't lucky enough to be born into a family that was already "in the know." Some folk manage to discover their magic on their own, like my grandfather, but not all.

Will you tell me about him?

Who-- my grandfather? There isn't a lot to say...

No? But it seems like there must be a story there. When he was born, it was written, "not a mage, wrong family," right? But still, something drew him to that power.
