That's an idea. I don't know if I can manage something that small. I'm limited here.

Or I should say, if I manage it, I'll get stuck. I was stuck as . . . that other form, the other night. Only until the morning, but it was frustrating. I can't talk when I take an animal's form.

...Do you... run out of energy? You have no core form, right...?

[tilts his head]

I don't have a core form, no. What you see now could be considered one, I guess.

[ ...Shifts, a little, obviously confused. ]

When I... when I'm really tired, or I can't think straight, I just turn back into a fox.

Um, but this form I've been using for so long, it's very easy...

I can keep a form for however long I want to. But I can't shift if I'm exhausted, or hurt badly.

This is what I looked like, when I first hit this age. [shrugs a shoulder] I decided to keep it, and just change what I needed to, as time went on.

...I-I haven't changed this form at all in a very long time... U-um, physically, I mean.

Ah. It's hard to explain what I do without sounding strange.

My "family" has a long line of men who were soldiers.

They're all me. So I change enough to look like me, but different. Like my "son" would.

[ Pauses thoughtfully. ]

...I never thought of doing that, that's a really good idea...

[ducks his head]

It was easier than coming up with new identities.

I just... Moved every few years, before I swam to America.

I lived there, before... This happened.

Um, yes-- with some dolphins, and then I flew with some gulls closer to land and boats...

Wouldn't taking a boat have been easier?

...I don't have a passport...

...Did you ever do anything else, besides be a soldier?

Yes. [seems thoughtful] I've been a farmer, a number of times. Worked in various places, like inns and and shops. Small jobs. Enough to support myself or a family.
