[There's a bit of a commotion at the top of the stairwell if you're passing. Gilgamesh and Enkidu (the ones who haven't been dead or armless today) are dragging an at least completely unconscious and chained up Moss Lion down the stairs. Both of them look pretty beat up, bleeding and dishevelled, possibly on account of not appearing to have anything especially sharp or pointy on their persons. They appear to also be in hot debate.]

Less impressive than other lions it might be, but once we got the dirty vegetation off it'd still make an excellent hat. Or a cloak. Or a coat. It's just a waste to put it back.

No? You acknowledge them equally then?

They are not the same person, but it has been years since I have met with Gilgamesh. What path either of them took . . . since we last parted I do not know.

And, perhaps, I do not think I could deny either, in the end.

I suppose not. I have two as well, but they're quite different.

How so?

Well, this isn't the first time gods have hauled me to another world to do their dirty work. And at that time, he was there as well, and we became close. The other one doesn't remember all of that.

How painful.

What we're given is time with each other, when that's gone it's a loss.

He's not 'mine' as far as the one who is my friend. He lost nothing. It's a bit odd, but... Well, I prefer it to having exact doubles anyway. I don't need two of him.

To look at him, did that cause you distress?

You mean as it did to your friend when the fake you arrived?

I was rather irritated about it, I guess. But it didn't last long. As long as the one that is mine is here the other is perfectly welcome.

[ thoughtful . . . ]

But one is more 'real' to you because he knows you. . .?

Unlike your friend, neither are fake to me. There is just the one from my more recent past, and the one from the more distant. But if I had to pick between the two, it isn't a choice at all. I imagine it's normal to be angry when met with someone you love who is still stuck in the past.

I imagine it is as well.

And what of you? How is it to have a 'fake'?

At first I was filled with joy at the thought Gilgamesh could have another companion.

Two of you specifically? Or were you hoping he could actually make another friend?

Either would have been fine.

Hm. He says he doesn't take friends now. Maybe one was enough.

[ ugh ALL MY GUILT. ]

I have heard him say that as well.

Why do you suppose that is? I suppose before he met you he wasn't the type to take friends either.

I did not know him then nor did I know of him.

Did he ever introduce you to any of his friends? Mention them?
