A white haired cheating brat had a doppleganger a day or so again. I couldn't explain it, but it happens now and then.

I may be alive, but that does not give them my fealty.

They aren't really asking for it, as far as I can tell. Their use of us and our need to survive line up pretty well.

Then, they are not unwise.

Exactly. It's a pretty clean set up. Instead of buying things with money you make sacrifices to them. And if you want a place to sleep, or to be able to walk outside the door without dying, you're going to have to kill what's out there. What you kill also works as sacrifices so you can get booze or medicines or whatever will make you feel better after the wildlife bleeds you a bit.

Or they would prefer to keep us for as long as they can.

They've been pretty upfront about wanting to keep us to rebuild their civilization for them. Not much of a motive to send us back.
