That is not how death works, and I believe you know it. I cannot answer about the timing of your deaths, but as for why you were brought here and not others... we have never used our abilities in this way before, nor are they meant for it. It was a struggle. That you came together was probably due to some 'bond' you share, making it easier.

"Bond," huh... Hmph. So what was worth struggling so hard?

A light of hope, perhaps. There are none we can turn to here, so we looked further.

Hope for what?

The restoration of civilization.

Oh, is that all? And you expect to do that with this group?

What makes you able or unable? What forces are behind all this? If I'm going to help you out, I want to know all about this place. If you won't tell me I'll just figure it out.

Effort and energy, the relative weight of the task. The influence of outside forces for or against us. Bringing you in is not so much complex as it is tiring and at the edge of our abilities.

[mostly talking to herself] I want to study it... if there's a formula like that... hmm...

Your magic... is it gone?

Of course not! But if the spirits aren't here, I'll have to find a new power source for my formulas again.

All power in this world comes from the gods. If you wish to have use of it, a sacrifice is needed. This is the same law for anything from casting spells to having running water.

Gods, huh? What kind of sacrifice?

We each accept different sacrifices in accordance with our nature. And the price also changes depending on what you desire. Access to my water magic would require a significant, reoccurring sacrifice. Others may only require one sacrifice, but the price would be much greater.

A significant, recurring sacrifice like what?

A lifestyle, and a vow, to become a priestess.

...What kind of lifestyle? What would I be sacrificing?

[looks at her in a thoughtful manner]

To be my priestess you must live as is best. To never selfishly keep what another has need of, to never turn your back on a human in need, whether it be from broken flesh or a broken spirit, to only make love with one whom you feel love for, and to only give that love to one. In simplest terms, you would have to always live for the happiness of the humans around you, and not act in wanton or perverse ways.

...Hmph. It's not like I can agree to something just like that. It's not like I'd do anything perverted anyway, but as for the rest, I'm not that good a person. Besides, I don't know how you'd define it.

You do not seem to me like a cruel or heartless person. Would you not know yourself if you were turning your back on someone in need?

I turn my back on people all the time.

Then that would be your sacrifice. To never do so again, in exchange for my magic.

And I'm telling you I can't promise that.

Then you cannot be my priestess.
