Ah, I did, yes. Still do, in a way, I suppose, though he's not here.

I have such a hard time picturing you in a relationship as you were back then. I can't even imagine you confessing at all.

We were both still plenty nervous, at the time. But I couldn't have asked for a better mate.

That sounds like quite a story.

It wasn't something I ever expected, when I agreed to go to Sabra.

Well, what you expected isn't something I can imagine... But I'm glad you found happiness, Edward. You deserve it.

Oi oi, what's that? Are you telling me I should get myself a good companion...? But you know, hearing you talk in wise old-man mode is weirding me out.

If that's what makes you happy. I don't know what it would be for you.

Is it? I guess it's different from how I was as a kid.

You're still you, but I'm used to more fire. And less height.

I suppose the fire tempered with the years. I was expected to be responsible, I couldn't go blowing up at every little thing when I was representing Amestris to another nation, or teaching a group of students.

The height was part of my wish from Sabra... indirectly, but losing the automail certainly helped.

[there is a moment of pause here, and he looks serious now]

Anything you feel like sharing.

All I know is that you gave up your memories in exchange for a wish, and that you were sorted in teams. That, and that it wasn't a pleasant place.

I'd share as much as you were interested... the years have given me enough distance to be able to talk about it without much difficulty.

As for the others... we were more or less the playthings of the old gods of that world, who were known to us as "Judges." Some of them weren't so bad, but the ones who were... it was quite a trial, and one where death wasn't the worst thing that could happen to you.

Playthings...?

They'd use us to give them power, or to amuse themselves. They'd feed on our fear, or blood and death. Most of them had long since been corrupted by those offerings, but a few remained on our side and helped us to break the cycle in our time there.
