I've seen a lot of young people die. Even kids younger than me.

There was a lot of death in my world when I was young... I always wanted to make things better for the kids as they grew up, but even in that world...

I suppose I can't help missing my home and the family I left behind there. This life's likely not going to be as calm as the one I left behind, either.

I was more of a fighter when I was your age, Becca. I appreciate the warning, I'm not in the same condition I was back then.

Yeah, I didn't think so. You'll have to clean out an apartment to stay in, though, I don't think there's any room in any of the clean ones.

I was hoping for an afterlife where I could do just that... and a few more years with my family before I ended up there.

I bet you know old man stuff that us kids don't, though. You could probably trade advice for everything you need.

Plus this isn't like Sabra. We help people out here. Like me, I do the cooking for everybody, and if the hunters don't need the sacrifice parts from their kills, I'll give 'em away to the people that need 'em.

Speaking of, I should explain about this place. Lessee, I need to make a list or something...

Gods, the directory, sacrifices, food and purification... I already told you about the animals... Animals are where the plants are.

I was a teacher back where I lived before. A fighter before that, but those days are past me... if you ever need help with cooking, that was something I was responsible for at home.

Back in Sabra, at least some of us wanted to help each other, anyway. King's rules were meant to stop us, but as much as we could, we'd do it anyway. I remember I made my fair share of worthless trades to help people out.

Are there other resources here, besides just the plants and animals?

[She tenses at the word 'teacher', but she forces herself to relax. This isn't home, and there's no little brother to be torn away from here.]

I've already got people who want to help out with the cooking, and it'll be too many hands in the kitchen if you help out, too. There's getting to be more of us, though, so we might have to split into teams to do the cooking...I'll let you know if that happens.

Don't eat or cook anything that hasn't been purified, though. I take care of that, but you'll need to know how. Catch me in the morning and I'll give you a demonstration--you take it to Dellen's shrine and ask her to purify it for you. Otherwise everything's poisonous. Everything.

Resources...well, that's the Gods for you. If it isn't plant or animal from out there, you'll have to ask the Gods for it. There's a directory over there of what god gives what and what they want in trade for it.

I know one of the gods takes going silent for a day in trade for stuff, and some people can't handle that. You could do that for people and be a big help.

...I'll...let you sleep in my bed till you get your own. I bet your back would kill you if you slept on the floor. But you'll need to hurry up and get one of your own as soon as you can, okay?
