I imagine most people are, all things considered.

As you say. And yet, you were not.

My death wasn't a surprise.

Is that the difference, do you think? I suppose I was not particularly expecting it at that moment, but I did intend to die at some point. How much of a surprise is too much, I wonder. You say yours was not at all.

Well, if you were to put it on a scale of one to ten, where on that scale would the surprise of your death be?

Hmm. Every person expects to die eventually, don't they? Which doesn't usually make it any less unpleasant or surprising when it happens.

Yours is a complicated question to answer. The timing wasn't a surprise; the way it happened was. Does that average out to a five? That makes it sound worse than it was.

Hmmm.

So very many creatures seem alarmed by death, though you are correct to say we should all expect it.

Because all creatures are born with the will to continue living. Death is inevitable, but still, they fight against it.

Of course we do. But that's very different from surprise, isn't it?

The opposite, in fact.

The opposite? Do you say that to fight is the opposite of surprise or that to you the truth is the opposite of what I have said. If it is the latter then I will disagree, as I find what I say to be general congruent with the truth.
