What: The other kind of new arrivals.

[a teenaged girl with intricately braided hair and dressed in sandals, a flowy, brightly-patterned skirt, and a short-sleeved sweater that looks like it was made of the leftovers of a million other sweaters, is pacing the shrine room, twisting a loop of yarn strung between her hands. A pile of reddish sand seems to move around, following her.]

I don't have the power to make what I draw real.

I didn't realize you were all so violent, wishing such terrible things.

I told you, I don't want anything bad to happen to anybody. I just like drawing nightmares.

[Holds up a picture of a luxurious bed with plenty of pillows and fluffy blankets.]

[suspicious of your pillow and blankets]

[Goes back to sketching; adds him in some elegant pyjamas.]

Do you only draw people?

[pencilpremonition]

I draw animals and scenes, too. What do you like?

[She offers him the drawing again, now done with it.]

[oi_theoi]

Hmm...draw me something that can be useful.

[pencilpremonition]

[She thinks for a few moments, then starts drawing a sewing machine.]

[oi_theoi]

[watches critically]

[Offers the finished product.]

It's okay... next time you should try something more original. [takes it though, which is a good sign]

More original? ...I'd have to think for a long time about that. I'm not really an inventor.

[oi_theoi]

[disapproving wave of his hand]

Then learn. Everyone should think. It's the most important thing in the world.

It's not that I don't think. It's that I don't think about machines. I think about how to make food for a lot of people with not a lot of stuff. I think about how to make what I have last and how to fix what's broken. Other people can make new stuff.

[oi_theoi]

[crinkles his brows] Learning starts the minute you are a creation in the womb until when your body accepts its return to the universe. How can you think that new things are just machines? Machines are new creations but they're not just the only new thing you can make. If you think about how to make things last, aren't you always looking to create something new with what you have? Wouldn't you want to make a system to redistribute food or goods more effectively? To limit creation and innovative thought to just machines...it's like...like... you're an unchanging thing! [he can't think of something more insulting at this moment]

[pencilpremonition]

[She thinks on that for a few moments, then nods.]

I guess I see what you mean... I think...

[She starts to sketch again. It looks like a knitted blanket, but with straps around the edges. She draws a person wearing it as a protective wrap, then carrying it with it stuffed full of stuff, using the straps to hold it shut. Then she draws them sleeping under it.]

If you waxed the yarn before you knitted it, it'd be waterproof, too. That's something useful.

[watches more approvingly and a bit calmed down]

I make recipes, too. Like the mashed veggies and gravy I made the other day. We don't have flour... I'd do anything to get flour and bread around here.

Flour. [thinks] That's from grains and roots. I don't know, we don't have grains here. Food isn't my area of expertise...

[pencilpremonition]

I wish I could be a god. I'd be the food god and make sure there's bread and flour, and cakes on people's birthdays.
