How dangerous is this place, past the poison, anyway?

That depends entirely on how dumb and or addicted to sunlight you are. If you can stay inside the safe areas, you're fine, you'd never even notice the danger. Outside the safe areas, though? You'd better be able to cast a decent sized fireball or use a sword pretty damn well or something.

How much need is there for someone skilled in healing?

Not a whole lot, really. We've got Dellen and she can heal by magic instantly. There's some people who don't like going to her, but they're just odd weirdos, not enough people to make it worthwhile.
