Hmm. I certainly don't disagree -- I didn't mean to imply disbelief, for that matter, only that it was odd.

The question of why I kept asking about various things would have been an inevitability.

It felt like a good segue.

Fair enough. Though I always consider the search for understanding valuable, personally.

And with the varied-- and growing-- populace, the amount of unknown things is. . . daunting.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a deterrent, nor am I masochistic enough to say that I enjoy the challenge, but until I can personally redefine what is "possible" and "probable. . . " It might be better for me to stick to writing mystery novels.

I'd advise you not to give up the attempt easily, personally. All perspective has value.

I have no intention of giving up, but if I don't have a good understanding of what I could possibly come across, I'm recklessly endangering myself. I won't delude myself into thinking everyone brought here is a saint; and someone with malicious intent dangerous enough with something as simple as a rock or stick in their hands. I'm sure I don't have have to tell you what they'd do with something stronger than that.

Furthermore, abilities aren't limited to what's gained prior to arriving in Thusia: It's just a hunch, but. . .

As I understand it, there've already been a few deaths caused by residents.

I can't say I'm exactly surprised, but I am a bit curious.

There were a string of assaults and murders perpetrated by someone named Karl. The incidents sparked some interest in the potential police force. . .

[More accurately, it gathered an angry mob that wound up doing nothing.]

. . . but ultimately he wasn't stopped until he no longer existed.

Either that or he chose his victims quite carefully -- but really, in an environment such as this I can't think he could do so carefully enough.

A combination of factors.

Since it seemed to be the first instance of serial attacks, it's likely most of the populace had their guards down.

And now that it's happened, their guards are raised but not directed anywhere useful.

Even then, that caution might be isolated to the parties involved.

Newer arrivals probably aren't aware of what happened.

We'll see what the police force plans to do about that.

Just because the first sheriff quit doesn't mean it's disbanded.

So we will. And if the initial sheriff quit so easily, it's hopefully in better hands now.

The former sheriff appointed her second-in-command. She has a general understanding of how things are meant to be run, due to her father's influence.

I suppose we'll see how she handles the next crisis.
