It's simple. The feeling, the motivation to protect others is what starts things like knights or the police or really just hunters. The desire to protect is what makes places like this. A safe haven in a dangerous place.

Now those who can 'protect others' are more than able to 'protect themselves.' So if they all decided to protect themselves, what happens to the others like ya who can't fight the monsters?

Alright. Maybe if someone isn't totally useless and it somehow benefits you to protect them, fine. But that's it. Out of necessity. Any other reason is just stupid.

I was here near the beginning. Ya couldn't go down the hall without risking a Mosslion trying to bite yer head off. This is pretty safe.

Ah, but then that goes into other problems. How do ya determine whose 'necessary?' I mean, children are pretty useless when they're still learning and growing, and they could grow up not fulfilling yer needs. But they COULD.

And ya can't just ignore all the children because what if ya need more people for some reason down the line? Or how about when ya get so old ya can't defend yerself properly?
