who look a little like they wrestled something full of claws, then took a brief spin in a blender to round things out.

Needless to say they are probably more red than any other color.

And i guess their hearing might be a little shot.

But surely they feel better!

Mm, but . . . what I would've wished for, I guess, is something I wanted to accomplish on my own. With my team. I'm not the kind of person to use a wish for something like that.

And you could think of nothing else?

Yeah . . . him and his caused a lot of problems in my world. Don't know if he got out of Sabra, though, so . . . [shrugs]

...it sounds like many of the people here had their own heavy destiny. I wonder if there is something about that type of spirit, that calls out to the gods.

. . . that's a good question.

I don't think it can be a coincidence that you've heard their call twice. And I do know that there are such things, an unbreakable spirit. The likes of which can overcome any obstacle, endure any hardship, and still follow a just path, and still find triumph in the end. These may be the very spirits these gods, with none to call their own, have been seeking from other worlds.

They're looking for people who can still fly. It makes sense, but . . .

But..?

It's kind of hard to keep that kind of spirit, knowing you died and . . . really didn't find that "triumph" you mentioned.

[slides her hand down your arm to hand your hand and squeeze it]

You don't have to worry about that.

[. . . squeezes back '-']

I can't not worry about it.

It isn't a thing you keep or lose. It is who you are.

[pause, looking off]

I know you must have faced great hardship, the kind that no ordinary person would ever know. And the reason we're here... well, that's not an easy weight to carry either. But even when you are at your weakest and most defeated, that spirit is yours alone. And it might be buried, but it will never be crushed.

That, I think, is why you are here. In a way it's cruel, but... the gods. They must place their bets on someone they can rely on. So it must be someone who will always still be able to fight, even if, perhaps, you would like nothing more than to stop.

...but, if it means anything, you aren't being asked to fight alone. I wouldn't be surprised if many people here had similar spirits. Even if you just need someone to lean on, you can do it knowing that they also won't be crushed.
